    Where's the interest???

Post by BigJohnMic on March 28th 2012, 9:44 pm

People, people, people... what is going on here? Once upon a time, this league was as active as any. We had tons of user content, and lg owners actually wanted get games in. Just trying to figure out how we can spark interest in what we've took so long to built. Any suggestions?

I don't know what's going on but, very rarely in the past, would I have to have a game simmed and I usually received responses to my message board posts for scheduling. But this season, it's like pulling teeth to get any communication with people and several of my games are being simmed but not because I haven't tried. I regularly post on the message board to initiate and if I haven't heard from that person, I will try to send a message through AIM. As a matter of fact, I asked one of my opponents recently if he noticed my scheduling post on a night before advance (the message was posted a day or two prior to asking) and his response was "No". That clearly tells me that people aren't even paying attention to the message board anymore!!

So, although AIM is handy and all, I think we need to focus on a primary source of communication which should be the message board. I believe scheduling should be initiated on the message board (which also shows proof of an effort to schedule your game). And communication can then continue through AIM if necessary. This method also shows the commish who's making an effort to schedule their games and executive decisions are easier to make as a result.

That's how, I believe, we need to rectify this problem.

Fantastic point, Sal. I completely agree with everything you just said. Posting on the boards shows everyone (including commish) who's making an effort to schedule games, and should be the primary scheduling tool.

On a side note, I know I've had a few sims this season as well for various reasons, so I'm not pointing the blame at anybody at all. That's not my intent here. I'm just trying to figure out how we can continue to thrive as a league. Sal made an excellent point. Any other ideas? And DK, where do you stand on all of this? Seems like interest is dwindling...

yea, its a shame activity and interest has diminished by so much. But there are reasons for it.

For one, its March...I feel like once football season ends, and the other three major sports are running in gear while Football is in the off-season, people just generally lose interest in madden

Two...its also that time of year where people are fed up with madden and its faults...its often by this time where people have seen every exploit there is and just dont want to deal with it anymore

Three...we've lost quality owners. And I'm gonna be honest, I don't think we've gotten quality replacements. The blast has been very heated over the last couple of weeks, regarding the line of sim and unsim. This has caused us to lose even more good owners like Sack and Jamery, because they're sick of dealing with this shady line of sim and unsim gameplay.

What do we need to do to fix these issues?

As far as communication, the message board and AIM should be priority number 1. If you log on AIM, and don't see your opponent online, or cant leave him a message while their off-line, then your immediate next thing should be to post on the board in the scheduling forum. Aside from that though, I do believe we all need to break down and list a phone number for texting purposes. I understand there are those who won't want their number listed on a message board, and thats fine. If you feel you absolutely do not want your number on the board...then so be it...but we're all mature around here (except for Bik)...we should be able to trust each other enough to list a phone number for text message purposes only.

As for everything else...its time for this league to crack down. If you have an issue with someone's play style...you need to take a stand, and file a complaint to DK with proof. As much as we'd like to blame DK for not being strict in this aspect...we need to equally blame ourselves for not doing enough to make him aware of issues. Maybe as a group, we need to come up with a set of rules and regulations. Or maybe we need to elect a judicial board of some sort. I don't have experience with any leagues outside of this and my own, so I'm not sure who other leagues do it, but if there are other methods from other leagues that you all know of, we need to work to implement them.

And again, great points all around. Especially about how we handle complaints. The validity a complaint is directly connected to whether there is evidence (of the video variety) to support your argument. Holding guys to a higher standard of SIM play might be needed if we want to attract/retain quality Madden Sim Players.

I agree with what Lilgame had to say. For instance, in another league I am, E32 in which Neo is also part of it, there is little turnaround of the core players. Similar to XML, we have been hanging around since Madden 10. You will see guys still interested in playing their games regardless if is March or December. One way commish keep things under control is that he ask for video evidence when owners are at fault because pictures speak a thousand words. He also delegates part of his functions to other two guys he trust because of the different time zones, when you need to boot people to play cpu, etc. Also, most of us, if not all, are guys 30+, I know age might or might not matter but just another indication that maturity counts as well. In addition, if you want to get it, you need to pass a test, and that is playing one of the commish on a friendly game so he can see what you made of…

By no means I am saying that we should duplicate what goes on this league both Neo and I are part of. I am just throwing my two cents on how things are in other leagues for those guys that are only part of this league. I love the way DK runs XML, but in my humble opinion I think he needs to empower others to help him run it. We should also find ways to keep people motivated, either extending trading deadline, or allowing to trade as many players as you want, suspend players on teams that break the rules, create incentives for those who make playoffs i.e rewarding them an extra FA pick, I don’t know some kind of activity that will increase the level of creativity. It is not coincidence that whenever we are getting closer to the rookie draft or FA pick, is when more people are excited and jump into the bandwagon and are more active on aim, on the forums etc….we need heated healthy rivalries kind of what Denver Cole and Indo used to have, i remember Echo always posting something on the forums every day arguing with Filiteano, we have lost good owners on KLC, Sack and rookie Jamery. So I think is a combination of all these factors, the new people that we have brought in, the lack of interest of some of the existing owners, etc.

Being on aim from time to time and listening to some of you guys complaining about the playing style of some of us, DK has to realize that he is losing the forest for the tree. How much more are you willing to allow to lose good players when the common denominator seems to be always the same. Either way, that is not the main reason I believe or why we stinking now as a whole league, and it is not like DK has not acted before when foul game has been suspected, but acting fast, being proactive instead of leaving things linger around for a long period of time, will definitely increase the morale of the owners.

Yea, as spank said, I'm not at all saying this league isn't run well. If this league wasn't run well, we wouldn't be in our 10th season since Madden 10. 10 Seasons since Madden 10 is quite a feat and DK should absolutely be praised for getting us to this point. I know from running a league for just my friends and their friends...its not easy being a commish.

+1... And, I know I'd be down for helping with responsibilities (as I know many of you would be, as well) if DK felt/is feeling overwhelmed.

I for one believe that the majority of the issue is due to the NFL season being over, Madden getting stingy and old to many, and baseball season being here. I contribute much of it to that, it's inevitable this time of year. It's happened every XML before, so this is no different. Now, we can make some adjustments going forward.

I agree with the statement that the forums should be No. 1. I've always thought that, however guys DON'T visit as often as necessary especially for scheduling purposes. So...I have the idea of making it a more integral part of the scheduling process. Meaning that if you haven't heard from your opponent and you haven't made a post on the forum to try and schedule you cannot have your opponent booted to play the cpu. If you have posted, and mention try other forms of contact with no success you will play the cpu. As mentioned before it DOES provide proof that someone tried to make contact with someone else to schedule. This is an idea or at least something to consider.

The 'cheese' play upsetting a lot of guys, in order to crack down...(if a full crack down) is necessary we are going to lose owners. There's no way around it, I'm not saying that I've allowed it but I may have been light on guys as of late this I agree to. If you want the hammer, you'll get the hammer back...but guys may be pissed off when it happens (which is only usual lol).

I do like the suspensions idea and have thought of it before but have only issued it like once or twice. If someone has a major complaint and there is proof to this (or I believe it) we could suspend the player for a couple games or something to tone it down if someone deserves to stay in the league but needs some adjustment.

I can go team by team in the league and sort through issues for (nearly) each player, whether it be poor scheduling, complained 'cheesy' play, or inactivity. A few of us have the dedication that is required, while many others lack. This lack is all on the owners, not the ones who schedule, play, provide league content, etc. By doing so, your assisting the league. The rest of you aren't providing anything. I find that I'm not swamped over or over worked during the season. When I need most help is the offseason, and I will ask for help from others this upcoming offseason when needed.

The losses of all our great owners are all for a variety of reasons. Lack of time, upset with Madden, tired of Madden, etc. And most will be back when Madden 13 comes out. In the mean time we need to find replacements as we continue.

One last thing I'd like to mention is something I believe is a big reason of many of the complaints we've had recently in the league. The 4-6 defense. Not the defense itself but the way it's used. I'm considering outlawing the 4-6 defense as the base defense. I feel it causes way too many problems. It's known that with this defense in Madden it glitches up opposing offenses.

Just know this...XML is here and here to stay. Whether you want on or off, it's your call but the show will move on. We will be continuing to play as long as we can have some dedication across the league as well. For those who are inactive, cheesy, or have no interest in being here. The hammer will be dropped.
